Embrace the Uniqueness of Tokyo

Tokyo’s vibrant energy is infectious, and even after spending five days exploring its hidden corners and bustling streets, I yearned for more. It’s a city where quaint coffee shops tucked away in lush gardens coexist with shops selling quirky, cartoon-themed merchandise. This juxtaposition of the weird and the wonderful is what makes Tokyo, well, Tokyo.

As Anthony Bourdain famously said, “Tokyo may well be the most amazing food city in the world, with a nearly unimaginable variety of places stacked one on top of the other, tucked away on every level on densely-packed streets.” The sheer abundance of culinary delights is enough to make anyone’s head spin.

Tokyo Awaits: Dive into a World Unlike Any Other

Tokyo is mesmerizing in its complexity, a city that beckons those willing to step into a world that most will never truly understand. Even if you only scratch the surface, Tokyo will leave an unforgettable mark on your soul.

Planning Your Trip: Everything You Need to Know

For a memorable Tokyo adventure, start with these essential tips:

Getting Around

Traveling to Tokyo from Narita International Airport is simple. Narita Express and local trains offer convenient options. The JR Rail Pass covers some lines and is a great value, especially if you plan on doing a lot of traveling. Expect to spend about an hour to an hour and a half to reach popular areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya.

Navigating within Tokyo is a breeze. Walking, trains, and buses are all excellent options. The Suica card is a convenient way to pay for buses and local trains. You can purchase one at major stations and add funds as needed. If you have a JR Rail Pass, it’s also accepted on certain lines in Tokyo.

Important Tip: Purchase your JR Rail Pass before arriving in Japan!

Japan is primarily a cash-based society, even with its advanced technology. Always carry Yen to cover expenses like meals, shopping, and transportation. Seven Eleven ATMs are excellent locations to withdraw cash.

Timing is Everything

To capture crowd-free photos at popular attractions, arrive early, before 7:30 or 8:00 am. Popular spots become very busy later in the day.

Making restaurant reservations is crucial, especially for popular eateries. It’s best to contact your hotel concierge to book your reservations. Many restaurants are fully booked weeks in advance.

Where to Stay: Finding Your Perfect Nest

We rented an Airbnb with friends in a quiet area near Yoyogi Park. Higashi-Kitazawa Station is also a great choice for a tranquil stay within walking distance of a train station. Shinjuku and Shibuya are lively areas but may not be ideal if you’re seeking peace and quiet.
