Planning a family trip to Tokyo? This guide offers a family-friendly approach to exploring the city’s iconic sights. We’ll take you through three-, five-, or seven-day itineraries, ensuring a memorable trip for everyone.
Our Tokyo Journey
Our family, including my daughter, brother, and cousin, recently had the pleasure of exploring Tokyo during the winter season. While chilly, the weather was perfect for experiencing the city’s vibrant energy. We enjoyed delicious meals and navigated the city using the efficient subway system and walking. If Tokyo is just one stop on your travel plans, we recommend dedicating at least 3-4 days to fully immerse yourselves in the city’s charm.
Nostalgia and Iconic Brands: A Journey Through Time
This itinerary is designed with families who love nostalgia and iconic brands. We spent much of our time exploring places like Nintendo, Sanrio, Pokemon, and Disney, reliving childhood memories. However, it’s essential to understand that this is just one way to experience Tokyo. There’s so much more to discover!
A Light-Touch Introduction: Asakusa and Sumida
For a gentle start to your Tokyo adventure, head to Asakusa and Sumida. These neighborhoods offer a blend of history and modern attractions, including beautiful parks, museums, and viewpoints. Don’t miss the opportunity to:
- Ascend the Tokyo Skytree during golden hour for breathtaking city views.
Tokyo DisneySea: A Dream Come True
Even though I try to limit my Disney indulgences, I couldn’t resist the allure of Tokyo DisneySea with my daughter. This water-themed park boasts unique worlds and shows found nowhere else. Here are some highlights to enjoy:
- Live shows featuring beloved Disney characters (performed in Japanese).
- Indulge in delicious food and snacks, including cult-favorite gourmet popcorn flavors in collectible Disney canisters.
- Witness the evening show “Believe! Sea of Dreams,” which has become one of my favorite Disney shows! It’s truly magical.
Expanding Your Adventure: 5- and 7-Day Itineraries
Planning a longer stay? Here are some exciting additions to your Tokyo itinerary:
- Studio Ghibli Fans: Immerse yourselves in the enchanting worlds of My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and other Studio Ghibli films.
- Animal Cafe: Get up close and personal with adorable creatures at an animal cafe.
- Museums, Gardens, and Shopping: Explore museums, gardens, or indulge in some retail therapy at Don Quixote, a popular shopping destination.
Enhancing Your Experience: Book Recommendations
To further deepen your understanding of the places you visit, consider reading children’s books featuring local voices. Storybook Lists provides excellent recommendations. For example, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” by Japanese author Eiko Kadono follows Kiki, a young witch, on her journey to independence as she forms friendships and explores a small Japanese countryside town.
