Imagine savoring exquisite Italian cuisine while gazing upon the breathtaking panorama of Tokyo’s skyline. This was the reality for me and my friend Naoko, as we celebrated her 30th birthday with a truly unforgettable dining experience at The Restaurant by Aman, located on the 33rd floor of the Otemachi Tower.
This fine dining establishment, part of the renowned Aman brand, is known for its impeccable design and luxurious atmosphere. As soon as we stepped into the lobby, we were greeted by a breathtaking sight: soaring stone columns framing a seemingly endless ceiling, bathed in the warm glow of what looked like giant shoji sliding doors merged with a colossal washi paper lantern. It was a sight that left me speechless, a testament to the brand’s dedication to creating unique and unforgettable experiences.
A Culinary Journey Through Veneto
Our journey began with a welcome drink that set the stage for the culinary adventure that lay ahead: a refreshing Grenadine Italian Soda, hinting at the Venetian flavors that would soon tantalize our taste buds.
The Striped Jack Carpaccio with Malabar Spinach and Fresh Tomato Puttanesca was a delicious symphony of flavors. The freshness of the fish perfectly complemented the sharpness of the capers and olives. The simple presentation belied the intensity of the flavors, making every bite a revelation. As I savored each morsel, watching the vibrant cityscape unfold before me, I wished this first course could last forever.
A Symphony of Flavors and Textures
Next came the scialatielli, a thick pasta that was the ideal canvas for the robust ragu made from roasted peppers, served with taccole green beans and celery. But the true star of the show was the polpo piccante, a spicy octopus that transformed my perception of this seafood. It was undoubtedly the most tender octopus I’d ever tasted, and its bold flavors left a lasting impression.
Duck Dreams and an Enchanting Ambience
The main course presented a delightful dilemma: Sautéed Snapper with Scallops and Saffron, or Roasted Duck Breast with Okinawa Spinach, Black Garlic and Marsala Sauce. In the end, the allure of the duck proved too tempting to resist. The perfectly cooked duck was accompanied by adorable baby onions, which served as little vessels for the rich sauce. I never thought I would describe food as adorable, but these tiny onions were truly a sight to behold.
As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow across the city, the restaurant transformed into a magical space. The minimal lighting created an ethereal atmosphere, enhanced by the arrival of a dramatic storm that threatened to swallow Tokyo whole. It was a view that made our meal even more memorable.
A Sweet Finish and a Birthday Surprise
Aman didn’t disappoint when it came to celebrating Naoko’s birthday. She was presented with a personalized plate, welcoming her to her 30s. The unconventional Tiramasu, laced with espresso granita, provided a sweet and invigorating finish to our exceptional culinary journey. This unique dessert left us feeling energized and happy, a fitting end to a truly unforgettable evening.
From the stunning views to the exquisite cuisine and attentive service, The Restaurant by Aman delivered a dining experience that exceeded all expectations. It was a birthday celebration to remember, a testament to the power of good food, good company, and a breathtaking view that truly made us feel like we were on top of the world.
