A Shopaholic’s Guide to Prati, Rome: Where Shopping is an Experience

Rome: a city that captures hearts with its ancient history, breathtaking architecture, and delectable cuisine. But for many, shopping is an integral part of the Roman experience. As a local, I’m always happy to share my favorite shopping spots with visitors.

While designer boutiques on Via Condotti are tempting, I prefer a more authentic Roman shopping adventure. Prati, a charming neighborhood nestled near the Vatican, offers a unique blend of traditional Italian charm and modern delights. It’s the perfect place to shop before or after exploring the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Indulge in Italian Delicacies at Castroni

Castroni, a legendary Italian grocery store, is a must-visit for any food lover. This family-run establishment, with a history spanning over 80 years, is a treasure trove of authentic Italian products.

Stepping into Castroni is like stepping back in time. The shelves are lined with an array of Italian delicacies: from rich chocolates and aromatic spices to exquisite wines and handcrafted pasta. We picked up tricolore farfalle, a colorful pasta showcasing the Italian flag with its green, red, and white hues. The selection of chocolates is a chocoholic’s dream, featuring various cocoa percentages and tempting flavors like orange, raspberry, and pistachio. We opted for the dark hazelnut fondente, a truly delicious treat.

Beyond the Pasta and Chocolate: A Chef’s Paradise

Castroni is not just a grocery store; it’s a chef’s paradise. I, a transplant from the US, find everything I need for my culinary creations, including hard-to-find spices and international ingredients. It’s my go-to spot for taco Tuesday essentials like taco shells, refried beans, and salsa. But for my dad’s visit, the focus was on him, not me.

A World of Fantasy at Storia e Magia

After our culinary adventure, we ventured into Storia e Magia, a whimsical store tucked away in a small corridor. This hidden gem is a fantasy lover’s paradise. The shelves are overflowing with The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter paraphernalia. Medieval swords, fairies, and trolls fill the store, creating an atmosphere of magical wonder. Even if you’re not a fan of these movies or books, the store’s Disney-like charm is undeniable.

Tailored Style at Asole & Bottoni

Next on our shopping list was men’s summer shirts. Rome is known for its exquisite craftsmanship, and Asole & Bottoni embodies this perfectly. Here, shirts are a work of art. You choose the style, collar, cuff, and fabric, creating a personalized garment. The intricate details, like designed stitching on the collar, speak volumes about the designer’s expertise and imagination. My dad needed a different size, and the helpful saleslady promptly brought out the perfect fit.

A Sensory Feast at Unità Market

We finally arrived at our destination, the Unità Market, a bustling marketplace that appeals to all the senses. The vibrant colors and intoxicating scents of fresh flowers filled the air. We navigated past the fish vendor, whose absence of odor was a welcome surprise, and marveled at the fresh seafood. I couldn’t resist snapping a picture of the swordfish head, a testament to the market’s authenticity.

The chatzky sellers offered a diverse range of goods, from jewelry and belts to batteries and electronics. I managed to bargain for a new set of earbuds, a classic Roman shopping experience.

Finally, we reached the produce aisle, a symphony of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The subtle activity within the aisles was captivating. An older woman expertly peeled an artichoke, while two men chatted and snapped fava beans. The luscious strawberries, their color a vibrant red, were irresistible. We savored our fresh snacks, a delicious reward for our shopping spree.

Shopping Memories to Cherish

As we left the market and rested on the benches outside, the day’s shopping adventure washed over us. Our shopping bags, scattered around our weary feet, symbolized a successful day in Prati. It wasn’t just about the purchases, but about the shared experiences.

Sitting side by side with my father, enjoying fresh strawberries, was a moment I’ll cherish forever. I hope you’ll visit Prati and create some unforgettable memories of your own.
