A Grand Hotel in the Heart of Tokyo

The Tokyo Station Hotel, a majestic landmark with over a century of history, stands proudly on the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station. Though only spanning four floors, the hotel’s length rivals the height of the iconic Tokyo Tower. It’s like a sprawling, elegant hallway, with the third floor wrapping around the North and South Dome of the station. Walking its length is akin to taking a stroll through a bustling mall! Below, train travelers navigate the ticket gates of the domes, while visitors admire the grand red brick facade of the station. However, many might not realize that this architectural marvel is also a hotel, its windows offering a unique perspective of Tokyo from its 150 rooms and suites.

Ringing in the New Year at Tokyo Station

We found ourselves booking a room at the Tokyo Station Hotel at the last minute, as a New Year’s treat after a trip to Fujinomiya. It had been a dream of ours to experience this luxurious hotel, but with it being a public holiday and the Japanese imperial family’s annual New Year’s greeting taking place nearby, we weren’t hopeful about finding availability. This event, usually attracting over 60,000 attendees, was especially significant this year as it marked the first New Year’s greeting since Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne. However, due to a lottery system, only a limited number of people were allowed to attend.

Despite the holiday rush, a room became available, and the price was even slightly lower than expected. While still pricey for a luxury hotel, it seemed like the best deal we could get. This unique opportunity to ring in the New Year in the heart of Tokyo, after witnessing the majesty of Mount Fuji, was too good to pass up.

A Lucky Escape and a View to Remember

The Tokyo Station Hotel is a sanctuary away from the bustling sounds of trains and the city outside. Key card access grants guests exclusive entry into the hotel, creating a sense of privacy and quiet. Our initial reservation was for a smoking room in the South Wing. Fortunately, with the help of the hotel’s friendly staff, we were able to secure a non-smoking room with an even better view. This unexpected upgrade, coupled with a Hotels.com discount, resulted in a truly fantastic deal. Our new room offered a breathtaking vista of the station promenade and the central avenue of Gyoko-dori, leading to the Imperial Palace.

The view from our room reminded us of the Miracosta Hotel, where the busy pedestrian plaza transforms into a peaceful space after hours. Similarly, watching the Tokyo Station crowd disperse after the last trains leave creates a sense of awe and wonder. The absence of people transforms the scene into a photographer’s dream, perfect for capturing the play of light as the sun sets and rises.

Exploring the Hotel’s Hidden Gems

The Tokyo Station Hotel offers convenient access to the station promenade and dome floors via discreet hotel doors. From these vantage points, guests can gaze down at the bustling ticket gates of the central Marunouchi entrance/exit and both domes. The third floor provides an exceptional view of the inner domes that cannot be found in any public area of the station building. The hotel is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

The Tokyo Station Hotel is more than just a place to stay; it’s a unique experience that allows guests to be immersed in the heart of Tokyo’s history and beauty. The convenience of the hotel’s location and its unparalleled views create a stay that is truly unforgettable.
