Our trip to Japan was a magical experience that left us wanting more. From the moment we touched down, Tokyo’s vibrant energy captivated us! We spent six days in Tokyo and four in Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara. While we didn’t see everything we wanted, we had an amazing time, leaving us yearning to return! This Tokyo travel guide will delve into the places we explored, the delicious food we savored, and the valuable travel tips we learned.
Soaring to Japan: A Smooth Journey ✈️
Planning our trip, we were overjoyed to discover direct flights from San Diego to Tokyo on Japan Airlines. It was the best deal, saving us the hassle of driving to LAX. Our 11-hour economy flight exceeded expectations! The service was outstanding, and the food was truly exceptional – one of the best airline meals I’ve ever had. It was thoughtful and well-presented.
Tokyo Arrival & Navigating the City: Tips & Tricks 🚃
When flying into Tokyo, you have two airports to choose from: Narita and Haneda. We chose Narita because of the Narita Express Train, which whisks you directly into Tokyo with stops at major stations like Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, and Shibuya Station.
For accommodation, we used Airbnb for most of our stay and stayed at the Hyatt Centric Ginza for our last night. I have a hotel review if you’d like to learn more. We stayed in the Shinjuku and Koto Districts, but remember, location matters! Choose accommodations close to the places you’ll visit frequently. Even if you can’t find central accommodations, Tokyo’s efficient train system makes getting around a breeze, taking around 20 minutes at most.
Mastering Tokyo’s Transportation System: Insider Tips 🚇
Before arriving, familiarize yourself with the train system – watch YouTube videos to get a feel for it. Be aware of peak hours when people are heading to and from work. The trains get extremely packed, so be cautious with luggage.
When traveling with suitcases, consider a taxi to your destination. We found taxis readily available, and they were a lifesaver with our four suitcases. While taxi fares can be pricey, the convenience is worth it. However, if you opt for trains, look for elevators in the stations! They’re a lifesaver for luggage.
Here are some more Tokyo transportation etiquette tips:
- Escalators: Step to the left and leave the right side open for those in a hurry.
- Trains: Line up to the side of the train doors and allow passengers to exit before boarding.
- Suica Card: Purchase a Suica card for convenient and efficient travel on most public transportation (metro, buses, trains, monorail). It’s a rechargeable prepaid smart card.
Financial Tips & Japan Rail Pass: Planning Your Budget 💰
Carry cash to refill your Suica card because ticket kiosks don’t accept American credit cards. You can exchange currency at Tokyo Station.
For those venturing beyond Tokyo, purchase a Japan Rail Pass in advance. Activate it upon arrival and enjoy unlimited travel on all JR National Trains, including Shinkansen Bullet Trains (which we used to reach Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara) and the Narita Express.
Dining Delights: Japanese Food & Etiquette 🥢
Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure! Here are some essential dining tips:
- Tipping: No tipping is required!
- 7/11: Stock up on snacks and drinks at the ubiquitous 7/11 locations.
- Credit Cards: While some restaurants accept credit cards, most prefer cash.
- Vending Machines: Many restaurants use vending machines for ordering and payment. After paying, you’ll receive a ticket to give to the waiter/waitress.
- Chopsticks: Don’t rub chopsticks together to remove splinters – it implies they’re cheap. Also, never stick them straight up in a rice bowl, as it’s considered taboo and a reminder of funerals and bad luck.
- Paying: You’ll usually pay at a vending machine or receive a bill to pay at the cashier.
Mastering Basic Japanese Phrases: Essential for Dining 🗣️
Here are some helpful Japanese phrases to navigate dining experiences:
- “Sumimasen” (Excuse me)
- “Arigato gozaimasu” (Thank you)
- “Oishii” (Delicious)
- “Mizu kudasai” (Water please)
- “Okai” (Check please)
By following these travel tips and exploring the city with an open mind and a sense of adventure, you’ll be well on your way to creating your own unforgettable Tokyo memories!
