K5 is a unique gem in Tokyo’s landscape. Unlike the usual international chains and generic business hotels, it is a stylish boutique hotel owned by Japanese entrepreneurs, making it a truly special find. This independent hotel, a member of Design Hotels, is named after its address in Kabuto-cho 5, Tokyo’s former financial district. Once known as the “Wall Street of Japan,” this area has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to K5’s arrival three years ago.
K5: Where Style Meets Substance
The building itself, a former 1920s bank headquarters, is a captivating blend of old and new. Stockholm-based architects Claesson Koivisto Rune took inspiration from “coexistence with nature in the city” to create a vibrant and modern space. The original concrete shell and parquet flooring were retained, providing a raw foundation for colorful encaustic tile floors, copper-plate doors, curved walls, and vibrant glass panels. The textured walls evoke traditional Japanese Sukiya architecture, adding an authentic touch. The custom-made furniture, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and crafted by renowned Japanese firms, blends seamlessly with the space.
Rooms That Inspire
K5’s 20 rooms are spread across three floors, each offering a unique experience. Second and third-floor rooms boast three-meter-high ceilings, while the fourth-floor Loft rooms feature soaring 4.5m ceilings and abundant natural light. A distinctive Suifu chochin lantern, crafted from bamboo and washi paper, hangs above each bed, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Signature K5 rooms feature long, sheer curtains inspired by shibori dyeing techniques, adding a dramatic touch to the space. The origami-inspired lounge chairs and compact desks contribute to the overall sense of comfort and style, and instead of a television, guests are treated to a record player and selection of vinyl.
Dining Delights: Caveman and Beyond
The ground floor is a haven for food and drink, with two distinct spaces: the velvet-upholstered Ao ‘tea and library bar’ on one side and the main social space on the other. This vibrant area is divided by galvanized steel shelves and plants, creating a unique environment that houses the Switch coffee stand and the Caveman bar and restaurant, open to both guests and non-guests. Caveman, a “progressive Japanese” restaurant led by acclaimed chef Atsuki Kuroda, is a highlight of any stay at K5. The sharing tables and intimate circular seating offer a perfect setting to enjoy the delicious nine-course evening menu, which blends Japanese, French, and Scandinavian influences.
A Neighborhood Rich in History and Charm
K5 is located in Nihombashi, a historic district on the east side of Tokyo. While it may not be the most obvious choice for a base, it offers a fascinating and immersive experience. The area is named after the historic “Nihon Bashi” (Japan Bridge), which marked the center of old Edo (Tokyo).
The K5 Experience: A Blend of Style, Culture, and Convenience
K5 offers a unique and memorable stay, combining stylish design with a true Japanese experience. From the charming staff to the delicious cuisine and convenient location, K5 is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking something special in Tokyo.
