A Temple of Reclaimed Land: Tsukiji Hongwanji

Tsukiji Hongwanji, a majestic Buddhist temple in Tokyo, stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The temple’s very name, “Tsukiji”, meaning “reclaimed land,” reflects its unique origin. Initially constructed near Asakusa, the temple was tragically destroyed by fire in 1657. Determined to rebuild, devotees embarked on a daring land reclamation project, transforming the sea into a sacred space for their faith. This dedication to their beliefs is what makes Tsukiji Hongwanji so special.

A Fusion of East and West: Architect Ito Chuta’s Masterpiece

The current Hondo (main worship hall), built in 1934, is a marvel of architectural design by renowned architect Ito Chuta. Drawing inspiration from ancient Buddhist architecture in India and other Asian countries, Ito infused the temple with a unique blend of Eastern and Western elements. The temple’s roundish roof, modeled after the sacred Bodhi tree’s leaves, symbolizes enlightenment. A lotus flower, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, graces the center of the facade, adding to the temple’s ethereal beauty.

Ito’s love for “yokai,” traditional Japanese monsters, is reflected in the temple’s intricate carvings. Winged lions, oxen, horses, and other fantastical creatures adorn the temple, adding a touch of whimsy to its serene atmosphere. Hidden within these carvings are four legendary Chinese animals: the Blue Dragon, Red Peacock, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise, adding an extra layer of mystery to the temple’s design.

A Sanctuary of Sound and Light

Step inside the Hondo, and you’ll be greeted by the mesmerizing sound of a large pipe organ, a unique feature for a Buddhist temple. Sunlight streams through stained glass windows, casting a kaleidoscope of colors onto the temple’s interior, creating a truly unforgettable atmosphere. The blend of traditional Japanese architecture with modern Western influences creates an experience that is both inspiring and calming.

Immerse Yourself in Buddhist Ritual

Tsukiji Hongwanji invites visitors to participate in its rich traditions. Before entering the Hondo, visitors are encouraged to follow a simple ritual:

  1. Stand a step back from the incense burner and bow lightly.
  2. Take a small pinch of incense and sprinkle it into the burner.
  3. Press your palms together, bow forward, and recite “Namo Amida Butsu” – a mantra meaning “I entrust myself to Amida Buddha.”
  4. Bow deeply, step back, and bow lightly once more.

This simple act of reverence allows visitors to connect with the temple’s spiritual energy and find peace in the presence of the Buddha.

A Journey of Senses: Food, Music, and Cultural Experiences

Tsukiji Hongwanji is more than just a place of worship; it’s a vibrant cultural hub offering a unique blend of tradition and modern amenities. Cafe Tsumugi, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, provides a peaceful space to enjoy coffee, tea, and light snacks. Shisui offers a taste of tradition with its shojin ryori (vegetarian Buddhist cuisine), showcasing generations of culinary wisdom.

The temple also hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year:

  • Morning and evening services: Begin with the ringing of the kansho bell and include sermons delivered by priests.
  • Classical and Buddhist Music Performances: Enjoy the enchanting sounds of Gagaku, traditional Japanese music, played on a diverse range of instruments, including the temple’s magnificent pipe organ.
  • Annual Events: From celebrating the birthdays of Sakyamuni Buddha and Shinran to the Ho-onko service honoring the virtues of Shinran, the temple calendar is packed with meaningful rituals and celebrations.
