Jogashima Island and Misaki Port are two hidden gems tucked away at the tip of the Miura Peninsula, a scenic stretch of land between Kamakura and Yokohama. These destinations offer a charming escape from the bustling cities and a glimpse into the beauty of the Japanese countryside.
This article is a personal account of a day trip to both locations, showcasing their unique attractions and offering insights into the best way to explore them.
A Day of Discovery: Jogashima Island and Misaki Port
My adventure began with a train and bus journey that took me to Jogashima Island first. This small island, with a circumference of just four kilometers, boasts a captivating coastline and plenty of outdoor activities. From the eastern side, I explored the island on foot, making my way to the stunning Awasaki Lighthouse, which stands proudly within the expansive Jogashima Park. This park offers a perfect blend of nature and relaxation, with benches for rest, grassy lawns for picnics, and trails leading down to the rugged shoreline.
The lighthouse itself is a sight to behold. From its vantage point, I followed the trails down to the rugged coastline, where I could wander along the rocky shores and witness the power of the Pacific Ocean. Jogashima Island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering fishing opportunities, walking trails, and seasonal flower gardens.
As I continued my exploration, I reached the Umiu Observation Deck, a spot from which visitors can watch the migratory Japanese Cormorants nesting on the sea cliffs. Unfortunately, my visit fell outside the season for these fascinating birds, so I missed the opportunity to witness this natural spectacle.
Instead, I followed the inland trail to the Umanose Sea Cave, a mesmerizing natural wonder that is well worth the descent down the stairs. From there, I opted for a coastal walk towards the Jogashima Lighthouse, taking in the breathtaking views and exploring the intriguing rock pools and formations along the way. The crashing waves and the sight of fishermen braving the strong currents provided a thrilling reminder of the power and beauty of the sea.
After almost three hours of exploring the island, I found myself in the heart of Jogashima, where restaurants, shops, and accommodations are clustered together. I indulged in a delicious lunch of tuna, a local specialty that is served in various forms on the island, before venturing to the western end, where I enjoyed scenic views of Mount Fuji.
Misaki Port: A Quaint Port Town
My journey continued with a ferry ride across the water to Misaki Port. This charming town is renowned for its bustling tuna market and its quaint atmosphere. I explored the Urari Market, a two-story building that houses a wide variety of fresh tuna products on the first floor and a local produce market on the second.
A stroll through the town’s narrow streets led me past charming shops with traditional facades, which evoked a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. I even discovered a unique mezcal bar and restaurant nestled by the waterfront, run by a knowledgeable female proprietress. The bar, with its wide variety of mezcal, was a surprise find in this charming town and a testament to the diverse experiences Misaki Port has to offer.
A Day Filled with Memories
My day trip to Jogashima Island and Misaki Port was a delightful experience, filled with breathtaking landscapes, unique local experiences, and a sense of adventure. The rugged beauty of the island, the quaint charm of the port town, and the opportunity to connect with nature left me with lasting memories. Both Jogashima Island and Misaki Port are truly hidden gems, easily accessible from Tokyo and Yokohama, offering a captivating escape for those seeking an authentic and memorable Japanese experience.
Getting There and Around
Jogashima Island is easily accessible by bus from Misakiguchi Station, the terminus of the Keikyu Railway. From central Tokyo, take a Keikyu train bound for Misakiguchi (approximately 75 minutes, 950 yen one way). The train also stops at Yokohama Station along the way (50 minutes, 580 yen one way from Yokohama to Misakiguchi).
From Misakiguchi Station, take a Keikyu bus bound for Jogashima (2-3 buses per hour). The bus stops at Misakiko (Misaki Port on the mainland), Hakushuhi-mae (eastern side of Jogashima), and Jogashima (western side of the island).
A local ferry connects J’s Fishing on the western end of Jogashima to Urari Market in Misaki Port (5 minutes, 500 yen one way). The ferry operates every 1-2 hours, and it is recommended to check the schedule beforehand. Be aware that the ferry may be cancelled due to bad weather or mechanical issues.
