Imagine a world where beds are low to the ground, and meals are savored with a gentle cross-legged posture. Welcome to the fascinating realm of ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, and our experience at the charming Hotel Konanso in Kawaguchiko.
Stepping into our room at Hotel Konanso felt like entering a scene from a Japanese movie. The spacious space was adorned with tatami mats, the iconic straw flooring that adds warmth and a calming ambiance. The room was stripped bare of Western furniture, replaced by low tables and chairs that invited a relaxed, grounded way of life.
A Little Less Conventional, But Still Comfortable
While the low seating might take some getting used to, it quickly became a source of amusement. Picture this: me, attempting to relax on the chair near the back rest, only to find myself teetering on the edge! Though a bit tiring on the knees, the unique seating was a delightful departure from the norm.
Sleeping on a futon was another unique experience. It might not be as plush as a Western mattress, but it offered a surprisingly comfortable sleep. The pillows, however, were a star attraction. They come with adjustable beads sewn into the cover, allowing you to customize the height for optimal comfort.
A Balcony with Breathtaking Views
Our room’s balcony opened to a picturesque scene: Lake Kawaguchiko and a beautifully landscaped garden sprawling before us. This peaceful oasis became our private sanctuary, the perfect spot to soak in the breathtaking sunsets that painted the sky in vibrant hues.
More Than Just a Room: An Immersive Experience
At Hotel Konanso, the room was just the beginning. The hotel’s service went above and beyond, exceeding all expectations.
A Welcoming Touch
Upon arrival, a gracious Japanese lady greeted us with a warm smile, patiently explaining the intricacies of our ryokan experience. She prepared a soothing cup of green tea using a traditional kyusu teapot and then guided us through the hotel’s facilities.
Onsen, Kaiseki, and Yukata: A Cultural Feast
She explained the different onsen (hot springs) available, the kaiseki (multi-course Japanese meal) served in our room, and even provided us with yukata (cotton kimonos), perfect for enjoying both our dinner and the onsen.
A Thoughtful Gesture
A toiletry bag filled with socks, a toothbrush, and a washcloth was also provided, demonstrating the hotel’s thoughtful attention to detail.
Beyond Expectations: The Bathroom
But the bathroom truly stole the show. This was no ordinary bathroom. It was spotlessly clean and incredibly simple. Shiseido shampoo and conditioner graced the shelves, a welcome surprise. And the stool? It was a game-changer, allowing for comfortable hair drying and even tooth brushing.
A Culinary Adventure: Kaiseki Dinner
Our kaiseki dinner was a highlight of our stay. Each course was a work of art, a testament to Japanese culinary artistry. The meal’s value was remarkable, and we would highly recommend including it in your booking.
The Onsen Experience
We also indulged in a private onsen overlooking Mount Fuji. The mineral-rich waters were invigorating, and the view was simply magical.
A Stay That Transcends Comfort
The ryokan experience at Hotel Konanso was more than just a comfortable stay. It was a journey into Japanese culture, a chance to immerse oneself in traditions and customs. While it may not be for everyone, it’s an experience that will stay with us long after we’ve checked out.
