Welcome to my gluten-free adventure through Japan! I’m sharing my culinary experiences in Tokyo and Kyoto, highlighting delicious gluten-free finds and must-try spots for anyone with celiac disease.
Tokyo: A City of Flavors
Tokyo is a vibrant city that caters to diverse tastes. I found incredible gluten-free options tucked away in hidden corners and renowned restaurants.
From cocktails to sushi, Tokyo has it all! The Earl Grey gin cocktail at the Edition bar was an unforgettable experience, while the sushi at a small, intimate spot wowed me with its freshness and chef’s dedication to celiac-friendly preparations.
7-Eleven, a convenience store chain, surprised me with a gluten-free breakfast haven. Their smoothies, iced coffee, and salmon onigiri made for a perfect start to the day.
Dinner at Kushiage Su, a small, cozy eatery, was an absolute delight. Their 100% gluten-free, multi-course tasting menu featured karage (fried items in a light batter) that was simply divine. The chef’s kindness and attention to detail made the experience even more memorable. Don’t forget to make a reservation, as walk-ins aren’t accepted!
Exploring the Charms of Harajuku & Beyond
My second day in Tokyo took me to the vibrant Harajuku district. A peaceful stroll through Yoyogi Park, after enjoying a quick breakfast at 7-Eleven, set the mood for a day of exploration.
Dinner at Rice Hack was a revelation. Their gluten-free pizza, arguably the best I’ve ever had, was a welcome surprise. I also indulged in their savory pastries—a perfect end to a day filled with discoveries.
Koffee Mameya, a coffee haven, left me speechless with its exceptional brews. Be prepared for long lines, but it’s worth the wait!
Tokyo Delights Continued
A light breakfast and coffee from 7-Eleven fueled my exploration of Tokyo’s culinary scene.
Gluten Free T’s Kitchen, a certified gluten-free restaurant, offered a safe haven for celiac diners. While I wasn’t blown away by the food, it provided a reliable option for those with dietary restrictions.
The hotel bar at the Edition welcomed me back with their signature Earl Grey and gin cocktails—a perfect end to a day filled with culinary adventures.
Kyoto: A Journey of Luxury & Flavors
My trip to Kyoto started with a splurge at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto, a luxurious haven for a special occasion. The hotel staff went above and beyond, keeping gluten-free bread and pasta readily available for my dietary needs.
Lunch at CoCo, a Japanese curry chain, was a pleasant surprise. Their celiac-safe curry, brimming with Indian flavors, delighted my taste buds.
Kyoto’s culinary scene is renowned, and I was fortunate to experience a one Michelin star restaurant specializing in tempura kaiseki cuisine. They were happy to accommodate my celiac needs with advance notice. This restaurant is a must-visit for anyone seeking a fine dining experience with impeccable service and delicious, gluten-free dishes.
Coffee enthusiasts will adore Coffee Mameya, a charming spot known for its perfect brews. While their food isn’t gluten-free, the coffee and ambiance are worth experiencing.
Continued Adventures in Kyoto
A scenic hike followed by a delicious breakfast at the Ritz Carlton made for a memorable morning. The hotel’s high-quality, fresh breakfast, including gluten-free toast and potatoes, was a treat. The Ritz even presented us with anniversary desserts from Pierre Hermes, located inside the hotel.
Dinner at the Ritz Carlton provided an unforgettable Italian experience. Their gluten-free spaghetti with vodka sauce was simply divine, and their exceptional wine list complemented the meal perfectly.
Maccha House, a matcha haven, deserves a visit for its delicious matcha drinks. We particularly enjoyed their frozen matcha options.
Hello Dolly, a cool bar in Pontocho, offered a lively atmosphere and incredible gin-based cocktails.
Tokyo Revisited: A Mixed Experience
The bullet train whisked me back to Tokyo, where I checked into the Prince Gallery, a Marriott property. Unfortunately, the hotel’s gluten-free accommodations fell short. They were unable to guarantee the safety of even basic ingredients like eggs, which was disappointing after experiencing the Ritz Carlton’s exceptional service.
Our final lunch in Tokyo, arranged by the hotel, was a delightful experience. We savored incredible sushi and sashimi, ending our culinary journey on a high note.
A Tranquil End to a Memorable Trip
A final morning in Tokyo included a leisurely breakfast and a peaceful stroll through Pontocho. We stumbled upon Café Agaru, a charming coffee shop on a creek. Sipping cold brew while listening to the calming sounds of the water was the perfect way to end our adventure.
Our last breakfast, while celiac-safe, wasn’t the most exciting. I’d had my fill of onigiri by this point.
A final day of shopping in Ginza led me to an extraordinary Japanese tea experience. The summer tasting menu featured seven different styles of tea paired with small bites of food. Each course was a masterpiece, showcasing the delicate flavors and artistry of Japanese tea.
Our craving for familiar flavors took us to the Aman Tokyo, where we enjoyed delicious burgers and cocktails. It was the perfect way to conclude our culinary journey through Japan.
This trip was an absolute feast for both my stomach and my soul. I highly recommend exploring Japan’s culinary scene, especially if you’re looking for gluten-free options. With careful planning and a little research, you’re sure to find a treasure trove of delicious experiences.
