Craving a break from the bustling city life of Tokyo? Look no further than Mt. Takao! This beautiful mountain, just a short train ride away, offers a refreshing escape into nature. We spent a weekend exploring its trails, temples, and charming attractions, and we’re here to share our tips and experiences to help you plan your own adventure.
Getting There: Reaching the Mountain
Our journey started at Shinjuku Station, where navigating the ongoing construction was our first challenge. To reach Mt. Takao quickly, look for the Keio Liner, a express train that takes just 46 minutes. It only operates three times a day, so plan your trip accordingly. We were lucky to snag reserved seats right on the platform, making for a smooth start to our weekend.
Alternatively, you can take the Chuo Line and transfer to the Keio Line at Takao Station, getting off at Takaosanguchi Station, the gateway to Mt. Takao. For our return trip, we opted for the regular Keio train, offering a more leisurely pace with several stops along the way.
Exploring the Mountain: Trails, Temples, and Monkeys
Arriving at Mt. Takao, we decided to take the chairlift up the mountain. It’s a great way to admire the stunning views as you ascend. Don’t forget to stop by the visitor center at Takaosanguchi Station for a map and information. We chose to follow Trail 1, the Omotesando Trail, a mostly paved path that leads to the Monkey Park and Yakuo-in Temple.
The Monkey Park is home to about 60 playful monkeys who participate in presentations and feedings throughout the day. Some monkeys even respond to their names and perform tricks like demonstrating their impressive jumping skills. It’s a fun spot for both kids and adults, but if you’re not a fan of zoos, feel free to skip it.
The Yakuo-in Temple is a must-visit for its vibrant, colorful carvings and numerous tengu statues. The pathway to the temple is lined with lanterns and special trees, creating a mystical atmosphere. Trail 1 takes you directly through the temple, offering a break from the ascent to the top.
Food Stops and Scenic Views
Hungry? You won’t have to worry on Trail 1, as there are many restaurants offering delicious food. We found a spot near the Monkey Park with stunning views and delicious soba noodles. There’s something for everyone here, and you’ll be happy to have your fill before continuing your climb.
Mt. Takao has several trail options, catering to different interests and fitness levels. While we ascended on the paved Trail 1, we chose the more adventurous Trail 4, the Suspension Bridge Trail, for our descent. It’s a bit muddy with lots of stairs, but it winds through the forest, offering a more secluded and peaceful experience.
Taking a Break: Cooling Off and Relaxing
After our hike, we stopped by a delightful area near the station, where you can dip your feet in the cool river. The kids had a blast playing here, building dams with rocks. Be warned: the rocks are slippery, and many kids, including ours, ended up in the river! This natural playground was the perfect way to cool off and unwind after our mountain adventure.
For a truly relaxing end to our day, we headed to the Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, an onsen located right at the train station. This luxurious onsen features a variety of baths, perfect for soaking away the day’s adventures.
Takao 599 Museum: Discovering the Mountain’s Secrets
Before leaving Mt. Takao, we visited the Takao 599 Museum, which offers fascinating information about the mountain and its natural surroundings. It’s an excellent destination for children, with interactive displays and a short musical projection mapping show. Adjacent to the museum is a wood carving center where kids can enjoy creating their own wooden keychains for free.
Accommodation: Finding Comfort and Convenience
For our stay, we chose the Mt. Takao Base Camp Hostel, which provided a clean and efficient base for our group. The 4-person rooms were comfortable, and the on-site restaurant was a convenient option for meals. The hostel’s proximity to local convenience stores like Family Mart and 7-11 was a definite bonus.
A Tranquil Conclusion: Coffee, Cake, and Reflection
Before departing, we stopped by the Mt. Takao Coffee Roastery & Ceram, a cozy cafe that provided a perfect escape from the rain. We enjoyed delicious cakes and coffee, reflecting on our memorable weekend.
Final Thoughts: A Weekend Escape You Won’t Forget
Our weekend trip to Mt. Takao was more than just a getaway; it was a rejuvenating retreat into nature, culture, and tranquility. Whether you’re looking for a quick day trip or a leisurely weekend escape from Tokyo, Mt. Takao offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and culinary delights. It’s a destination that promises to enrich your spirit and provide a fresh perspective on the beauty of Japan’s natural landscapes.
