Rome is a treasure trove for shoppers, with charming boutiques and bustling markets promising a unique shopping experience. But where do you go when you want to find quality goods without breaking the bank? Enter Prati, a neighborhood nestled near the Vatican, offering the perfect blend of history, culture, and delightful shopping opportunities.
I’ve always loved exploring Rome’s diverse shopping scene, especially when I get to share it with friends and family. Recently, my dad visited from Martha’s Vineyard, and I couldn’t wait to take him on a shopping spree through Prati. It’s a convenient spot, easily accessible by bus, and the perfect place to shop before or after a visit to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica.
Castroni: A Step Back in Time
First on my dad’s list was dried pasta and chocolate—an Italian classic! While you can find these in any supermarket, I wanted to introduce him to the legendary Castroni. This isn’t your average grocery store; it’s a charming emporium that has been delighting Romans for over 80 years. Castroni’s shelves are bursting with high-quality Italian delicacies—from rich chocolates and aromatic coffee to flavorful spices and decadent truffle oil. The store has a nostalgic feel, a reminder of a bygone era when quality reigned supreme.
We carefully examined the pasta selection and settled on tricolore farfalle, which translates to tri-colored butterflies. The pasta comes in three vibrant colors, symbolizing the Italian flag: spinach for green, beetroot or tomato for red, and durum wheat flour for white. Our next stop was the chocolate aisle, a veritable paradise for chocolate aficionados. Venchi, a renowned Italian chocolatier since 1878, offered a tantalizing array of flavors—orange, raspberry, strawberry, pistachio, and more. We chose their dark hazelnut fondente, a delicious and rich treat.
Beyond the Basics: Spices and Ingredients
Castroni is more than just a place to buy pasta and chocolate. As a chef, I treasure this shop for its unique selection of spices and other culinary ingredients. It’s my go-to spot for taco shells, refried beans, and salsa—everything I need for a perfect Taco Tuesday! But, this shopping trip was all about my dad, and I was excited to share my favorite discoveries with him.
The Magic of Storia e Magia
Leaving Castroni, we stumbled upon a hidden gem tucked away in a small corridor. This is Storia e Magia, a truly magical store filled with all things fantasy. From Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter merchandise to medieval swords and enchanting fairy figurines, this store is a delight for fans of all ages. Even if you aren’t a die-hard fantasy enthusiast, you can’t help but be captivated by the whimsical atmosphere.
Tailor-Made Shirts at Asole & Bottoni
Next on our list were men’s summer shirts. In Rome, even the simplest items are elevated to an art form. We stopped by Asole & Bottoni, where shirts are made to order. You get to choose everything—the style, collar, cuff, and fabric. The attention to detail is remarkable, with beautifully designed stitching and exquisite craftsmanship. My dad needed a different size than what was on display, but the friendly saleslady quickly retrieved the perfect fit from their stockroom. Their offer of three shirts for a fantastic price was too good to pass up.
The Unità Market: A Symphony of Senses
Our shopping adventure took us to the Unità market, a feast for the senses. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, their colors a vibrant tapestry. We weaved through the stalls, passing the fish vendor where the absence of any unpleasant odor was a welcome surprise. As a chef, I was impressed by the quality of the fish—bright red gills, clear eyes, and the fresh scent of the sea.
We finally reached the center aisle, where the market’s true magic unfolded. The aroma of fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs was intoxicating. The scene was bustling with activity—a symphony of sights and sounds. I watched an older woman expertly peel an artichoke, her movements graceful and effortless. Two men chatted animatedly while snapping fresh fava beans, preparing them for sale. But it was the vibrant strawberries that truly captured my attention. Their ruby red color and intoxicating fragrance sealed the deal. We grabbed a delicious handful and escaped the lively market.
A Day to Cherish
As we sat on a bench outside the market, surrounded by our shopping bags, the day’s adventures settled in. It wasn’t just about the shopping, but about the shared experience, the laughter, and the memories made. Sitting beside my father, quietly enjoying our strawberries, was a moment I will treasure forever. I hope you’ll visit Prati, explore its charming streets, and create your own unique memories in this captivating Roman neighborhood.
