Have you ever imagined exploring Rome through an Asian lens? While the city is famous for its ancient wonders, there’s a vibrant Asian community waiting to be discovered.
A Vietnamese Perspective
As a Vietnamese living in Rome, I was drawn to the Asian presence in this predominantly Western city. It felt like a journey of self-discovery, exploring how my culture intersected with the Italian way of life. While Rome might not be as cosmopolitan as London or Paris, I was surprised by the hidden gems I found.
Ancient Orient Meets Modern Rome
One of the first places that came to mind was the Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale (National Museum of Oriental Art). This museum, with its somewhat outdated name, holds a captivating collection of Asian art and artifacts, primarily from the Gandhara region. Although the museum’s ambiance might not be the most modern, the collection itself is truly remarkable, especially the intricate Iranian ceramics.
A Culinary Adventure
Rome boasts a diverse selection of Asian restaurants, offering Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Indian cuisines. While the quality might not match that of London, it’s hard to resist the temptation of warm noodle soups or exquisite sushi.
For a taste of Chinese cuisine, try Green Tea, which has earned a spot on the Michelin Guide. Looking for Korean food? Galbi is a recent addition, garnering rave reviews. Hamasei provides a wonderful Japanese sushi lunch experience. And for Vietnamese cuisine, you can choose between Thien Kim (with good dishes but high prices) or Restaurant Mekong (affordable but not as authentic). The owner of Restaurant Mekong, an Italian passionate about Vietnamese food, offers a warm and welcoming service.
A Glimpse of Asian Life in Rome
My search for Asian supermarkets led me to Roma Termini, where most of the Asian stores are located. It felt like a mini Asian town nestled within the bustling city. While I found grocery stores, I didn’t come across any shops selling other Asian goods.
Discovering Hidden Gems
To truly experience Rome’s Asian side, keep an eye out for temporary Asian fairs, festivals, and exhibitions. For example, Rome’s Asian Film Festival is a fantastic event. Wantedinrome.com is a great resource for discovering what’s happening in the city.
Unveiling the Soul of Rome
My aim is to show you a different side of Rome, one that goes beyond the typical tourist attractions. Each time I uncover something new about this city, I fall deeper in love with its charm. These unique experiences, not necessarily Asian-related, are what I want to share with you.
