This is the story of a lost laptop, a frantic search, and the kindness of strangers, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant Japanese adventure. It’s a tale that highlights the beauty of travel, the importance of friendship, and the unexpected delights that can arise when plans go awry.
A Smooth Start, a Shocking Discovery
Everything went according to plan. I landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and met up with my MBA buddies, Samira and Phil. We secured seats close together on the Japan Airlines (JAL) 747-400 flight, JL0061, and soared into the sky at 1:20 pm. The 10-hour flight was a dream come true, with delicious food, an excellent entertainment system, and all the amenities that have become rare on domestic flights. It was the perfect start to our journey.
But soon, a chilling realization struck me. I had left my MacBook on the plane, nestled under the seat in its black protective case. Panic gripped me as we sped down the Shin-Kuko Expressway towards the Weekly Mansion Hotel, later renamed Hotel MyStays Premier Akasaka. I pleaded with the bus driver to turn around, but my limited Japanese proved inadequate. My classmates, Melissa and JT, tried to calm me down, reassuring me that everything would be okay.
Lost Laptop, Found Kindness
At the hotel, I burst through the reception, declaring an emergency. Thankfully, a receptionist spoke enough English to understand my predicament. She connected me with the JAL lost and found representative, who promised to do everything she could to locate my computer. The plane was scheduled to depart for Azerbaijan soon, but it hadn’t left Japan yet.
I checked into my room, relieved to find a small but comfortable space with all the amenities we needed. Though my mind was still occupied by the missing laptop, I decided to join my friends for a night out to forget about my troubles.
When I returned to my room, a handwritten note awaited me: “They could find your PC so please call reception on tomorrow morning to Ms Amano.”
The next morning, a beautifully wrapped package awaited me at the reception desk. Inside, my cherished MacBook was safe and sound, protected by bubble wrap. Relief washed over me, a feeling that was amplified by the realization that I had chosen one of the best airports and airlines in the world to leave my computer. Japan truly is a safe place, and JAL is the best airline!
A Tokyo Tour and More
The next day, my power chord arrived via FedEx, and everything was back to normal. We began our exploration of Tokyo, starting with a walk to Ueno Park and Tenno-ji Temple, reminiscent of a previous trip with my friend Greg.
We joined a guided tour, visiting iconic landmarks such as Meiji Jingu, Japan’s most famous Shinto shrine, and the Tokyo Tower for a breathtaking panoramic view. We immersed ourselves in the bustling atmosphere of Asakusa Kannon Temple and its vibrant Nakamise Shopping Arcade, a haven for food and souvenirs. We even ventured into the sprawling electronics district of Akihabara, a paradise for anime and gaming enthusiasts.
Our journey took us to Kita-Kamakura, where we visited the Kōtoku-in temple and marveled at the Daibutsu giant Buddha statue. We strolled along the beach, where Yoav had proposed to Tamar, making it a truly special place.
Back in Tokyo, I enjoyed a baseball game at the Meiji Jingu Stadium, watching the Yakult Swallows battle the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. It was a fantastic way to experience the city’s vibrant sporting culture.
From Tokyo to Nagasaki
The time came for me to move on to Nagasaki, a city with a fascinating history. I took a high-speed train, the Tōkaidō-San’yō shinkansen, and arrived at Himeji Station, where I toured the historic Himeji Castle.
In Fukuoka, I was delighted to discover the wonders of the Toto automated toilet, a hands-free marvel that left me impressed. I joined some friendly foreigners for karaoke, enjoying an evening of music and laughter.
A Journey Through History and Peace
The next morning, I explored the historical sites of Nagasaki, witnessing the resilience of structures that had survived the atomic bombing. At the ground zero memorial, I felt a profound sense of reflection and appreciation for the city’s enduring spirit.
I continued my journey to Hiroshima, where I met up with the rest of the MBA crew. We visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war.
I took a boat to Itsukushima Island, where the serene Itsukushima Shrine stood majestically. I was captivated by the beautiful scenery, the friendly deer and monkeys, and the joyful atmosphere that filled the air.
Kyoto and the Gion Matsuri Festival
From Hiroshima, I traveled to Kyoto, a city renowned for its rich culture and exquisite temples. I strolled along the picturesque Philosopher’s Path and happened upon the Gion Matsuri Festival. The streets were alive with vibrant colors, traditional attire, and ornate floats, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle.
Reflecting on a Journey of Discovery
After an exhausting but unforgettable journey, I boarded a JAL Boeing 767-346-ER and departed from Narita International Airport (NRT), filled with memories that would last a lifetime. My lost laptop, the kindness of strangers, the beauty of Japan’s landscapes and culture, the warmth of friendship – these are just a few of the treasures I brought back from my adventure.
This trip had taught me about the power of resilience, the importance of friendship, and the unexpected wonders that can arise when plans go awry. It was a journey of discovery, not just of a country, but of myself.
